A driver has been left with ‘life-changing injuries’ after he was in a crash with a double-decker bus.

Firefighters had to wrench the hood off the top of his vehicle in order to prize him out before rushing him to Queen Elizabeth Hospital trauma unit for emergency treatment.

A passenger was also in the car at the time of the smash, but managed to remove himself from the vehicle without suffering serious injury.

No one on the bus was injured.

Emergency crews were called to the scene of the accident in Handsworth, Birmingham, at 2.30pm this afternoon.

The roads in the area of the crash were closed for some time but have since re-opened.
